The Democratic-Republicans, in the Election of 1800, accused the Federalists of wanting to bring back the monarchy.

The general thought process behind this was that the Federalists believed in a strong Central government with a strong Executive. The Democratic-Republicans, led by Jefferson, wanted the power held in the States and for the central Government to be weak.
