The width of a rectangle is the sum of the length and 3. The area of the rectangle is 54 units. What is the length, in units, of the rectangle?

= 3 +

[3 + ] = 54 ↷

² + 3 - 54 ↷

[x - 6][x + 9] = 0

We want this expression because when we talk about dimensions, we want NON-NEGATIVE numbers. The other expression gives us a solution of -9 = x, and we do not want that; this one gives us 6 = x, and THIS is what we are looking for.
