Students found that a box with sides 12cm, 3 cm, and 3 cm held 258 Skittles.

- What is the volume of the box?
- What is the ratio of skittles to the volume of the box (in cm 3 )?
- What is the volume of each Skittle?
- Using the ratios found above, how many Skittles would fit in a cylinder 9 cm tall with a radius of 3 cm?

Answer:

Volume = 108 cm³

Ratio = 43:18

Volume of each skittle = 0.418 cm³/skittle

Explanation:

Given:

Sides of the boxes = 3 cm , 12 cm and 12 cm

Total Skittles hold = 258 skittles

To Find:

Volume = ?

Ratio of skittles to volume = ?

Volume of each skittle = ?

Solution:

Volume of a box is given by the formula

Volume = Length * width * Height

Putting in the values

Volume = 3*3*12

= 108 cm³

Now to find Ratio of skittles to Volume of box which is

Skittles : Volume = 258 : 108

As 258 and 108 both are divisible by 6 so dividing them by 6

=
(258)/(6):(108)/(6)

= 43:18

Which is the required ratio

Now we have to find volume of each skittle so it could be found out by dividing total volume with total skittles

So

Volume of each skittle
=(total Volume)/(Total Skittles)

Putting in the values gives

=(108)/(258)

it becomes

= 0.418 cm³/skittle
