Answer:

Equations:
2\cdot t=108,\ 5\cdot s=108.

Solutions: t=54 minutes, s= 21.6 minutes.

Explanation:

1. Drain A empties a pool at a rate of 2 gal/min. The pool has 108 gallons of water in it. Let t minutes be the time needed to empty this pool, then

2\cdot t=108,\\ \\t=108:2=54\ minutes.

2. Drain B empties a pool at a rate of 5 gal/min. The pool has 108 gallons of water in it. Let s minutes be the time needed to empty this pool, then

5\cdot s=108,\\ \\s=108:5=21.6\ minutes.
