New York City became the nation's greatest commercial center because the Erie Canal funneled western produce down the Hudson River. Erie Canal was built in 1825 which make the connection between Hudson River and Lake Erie, Buffalo. After building the canal transportation of good and products became faster, because of this New York city became the greatest commercial center.
