area of a square = s² ( s is the length of the side of the square )

here s = 2x + 3, hence

A = (2x + 3)² = (2x + 3)(2x + 3)

To expand multiply each term in the second factor by each term in the first factor

A = 2x(2x + 3) + 3(2x + 3) ← distributing

= 4x² + 6x + 6x + 9 ← collect like terms

= 4x² + 12x + 9
