Federalism refers to a system of government where power is split and shared between the central Federal government and small governmental units, typically states.

What the principle of federalism is often used to support is the notion of a smaller federal government. So, the question becomes what percentage of the power does the federal government have as compared to the states.

Federalism is a political system that infer two or more governments (national and state government) share authority over a same geographical area. Both sides of government share power but neither can become too strong not too weak, that is why federalism is connected to the idea of limited government.
