Unfortunately, America is a pro-business country and not a pro-employee one. According to federal law, workers are not entitled to meal or rest breaks under it. Even rest breaks and meal breaks counting as hours worked are subject to very byzantine rules and regulations.
To complicate matters more, each state has its own set of rules and some states are more progressive while others are staunchly anti-workers. This is one of the reasons why worker unions are so important but they have been decimated by decades of adverse judicial and legislative decisions and by globalization.
