The fluid mosaic model was proposed by the Singer and Nicolson in 1972 which stated that the plasma membrane is composed primarily of phospholipids with other molecules like cholesterol, glycolipids and proteins.
Due to the presence of these molecules, the plasma membrane appears like a mosaic of molecules in which the proteins are either present in the embedded in the plasma membrane called " integral proteins" or proteins are attached at the surface known as " peripheral proteins".
Thus, the Fluid mosaic model comprises of the proteins also which forms the second major component of the plasma membrane.
