suppose that x varies directly with y and x=17 when y=-85. What is the constant variation and what is the value of x when y=-160

Direct variation equation is y = kx

Find k using the known x and y:

-85 = k17

K = -85/17

k = -5

Now find the unknown x:

-160 = -5x

Divide both sides by -5:

x = -160 / -5

x = 32
