In a Farewell to Arms, Frederick Henry is the main character of this story and simultaneously the narrator of the same. The title Tenente is used in order to emphasize Henry's character as he is reckless, alcoholic, popular and romantic.

Manera, is a driver and a mechanic who is waiting for the war to end and who believes retreat is the best option, he dies in the same fire in which Fred is badly hurt.

Passini is also a driver who like Manera is against war but his belief is that the war should end in peace without further fighting. He is wounded in the fire but not killed.

Hope this helps!
