The diagram shows a design for some signs that will be installed in the aquatic section of the zoo. The signs will have a decorative road border along the perimeter. If each unit of the grid represents 10 inches, what is the perimeter of the sign?

Answer:

380 inches

Explanation:

We have the figure in which each grid represents 10 inches.

Now, the number of grids corresponding the horizontal lines are 9.

Thus, one horizontal line is represented by 9 × 10 = 90 inches.

So, both the horizontal lines will be represented by 90 + 90 = 180 inches.

Because the number of horizontal grids = 4 and number of vertical grids = 3 for the slanted lines.

Since, the triangle formed is right angles. Using Pythagoras Theorem, we get the number of grids of slanted line x as,

x^(2)=4^(2) +3^(2)

i.e.
x^(2)=16+9

i.e.
x^(2)=25

i.e.
x}=5

So, the number of grids for the slanted lines are 5.

Thus, one slanted line is represented by 5 × 10 = 50 inches.

So, four of the slanted lines will be represented by 50 × 4 = 200 inches.

The perimeter of the sign = 180 + 200 inches = 380 inches.

Hence, the perimeter of the sign is 380 inches.
