The construction of the "Liberty ships" to transport troops and goods to the war required a labor force able to accomplish heavy industrial and mechanical work.

Former farmers were given wages much higher than they had ever been offered before. Consequently, the Georgians average income doubled, and many of them turned from farming to manufacturing.
