What did Darwin do in order to study plant and animals

Darwin spent over three years of this time on land, carefully observing rock formations and collecting specimens of animals, plants, and fossils. Throughout the journey, he used his observations to develop a series of ideas which later became the foundation for his theory of evolution by natural selection.
