On this image we can see a convergent plate boundary. One of the plates, the oceanic one, is subducting below the other plate, the continental one. As this subduction occurs in the ocean, the magma that rises from the mantle near the oceanic trench, manages to get to the surface, and above it. As the magma rises above the sea level, the crust that it has pushed upwards creates a volcanic island. The lava that comes out from the volcano will further increase the size of the island as it cools off and creates new igneous rocks. As this process happens along all of the boundary, there will be multiple volcanic islands that have formed, thus creating an island chain.
