The option that was not a consequence of the Green Revolution was: a global surge of organic and sustainable agriculture.

To begin with, the increase of crop yields of corn, rice and wheat due to hybridized seeds was one of the positive consequences of the Green Revolution because Mexico which was the first country in which agricultural practices began was able to produce more wheat than was needed by its citizens, leading to its becoming an exporter of wheat by the 1960s. After this success in Mexico, its technologies spread worldwide and in The United States after using the green revolution technologies, it became self-sufficient and became an exporter of wheat, too.

Second, the increased crop yields due to artificial fertilizers greatly reduced the threat of famine in poor countries was another positive consequence of the Green Revolution technologies. Countries all over the world benefited from the Green Revolution work conducted by Borlaug and this research institution. India for example was on the brink of mass famine in the early 1960s because of its rapidly growing population. A new variety of rice was developed, they produced more grain per plant when grown with irrigation and fertilizers. Today, India is one of the world's leading rice producers.

One last consequence of the Green Revolution, which had an important impact was that the use of artificial fertilizers harmed the environment in many areas. Even though fertilizers and pesticides give extra nutrients to the plants and kill pests, they can be very harmful if used without being careful. Studies found heavy metals and pesticide chemicals in drinking water. These substances are harmful and can cause serious health problems. Some of these problems may occur because some farmers may not know how to handle and dispose of toxic chemicals. They may also harm the environment by using too many of those products which may cause an undesirable loss in crop genetic diversity. India is one example of this problem, where about 75 percent of their rice fields contain only 10 varieties of plants. This is a significant drop compared to the 30,000 rice varieties that were planted 50 years ago.
