As, we know Pythagorean theorem is

a²+b²=c²,

where a&b are two sides of the triangle and c is it's hypotenus.

so, assuming 12=a, x=b and x+2i=c

  • a²+b²=c²

  • (12)²+(x)²=(x+2)²...substitute values
  • 144+x²=x²+4x+4...squaring it
  • 144+x²-(x²+4x+4)=0...shift x²+4x+4 to the left
  • 144+x²-x²-4x-4=0...equate the similar values
  • 140-4x=0....move 140 to the right to solve for it
  • -4x=-140....divide both sides by 4
  • x=35.... finally we get 35.
