Tom needs to buy fabric to make aprons for his wood shop. Each apron will be 1/2 feet long and 3 feet wide. Each piece of fabric that he can buy is 2 feet long and 3 feet wide. Tom needs to make 9 aprons. How many pieces of fabric does he need to buy?

Explanation:

Dimensions of 1 apron =
(1)/(2) × 3

Dimensions of 1 piece of fabric = 2 × 3

Now,
(Length of 1 pice of fabric)/(Length of one apron)

=
(2)/(1/2)

= 4

So, from one piece of fabric, Tom can make 4 aprons.

If he buys 2 pieces of fabric, he can only make 8 aprons.

Hence, he needs to buy 3 pieces of fabric to make 9 aprons comfortably.
