First, add 22 and subtract 3a from both sides

4 (+22) + 3a (-3a) = -22 (+22) + a (-3a)

4 + 22 = a - 3a

Simplify. Combine like terms

4 + 22 = a - 3a

26 = 2a

Isolate the variable (a). Divide 2 from both sides

(26)/2 = (2a)/2

a = 26/2

a = 13

13 is your answer for variable a.
