Catherine The Great vastly expanded the Russian Empire by both diplomacy and conquest:

  • She gained acess to the Black Sea by defeating the Ottoman Empire: she was granted territories like Azorv, Kerch, Yenikale, Kinburn and made Crimea a protectorateof Russia.
  • She defeated the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth: Russia received the largest share of Poland's territory when it was divided
  • She stablished Russian America by starting to colonize Alaska

During her reign, about 200,000 square miles where added to Russia's territory.

During her reign, Catherine amplified the borders of the Russian Empire to the south and the west, absorbing New Russia, Crimea, Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania and Courland, at the cost of two major powers - the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Two Nations. In all, it added about 518 000 kilometers to Russian territory
