Explanations on how the development of settlement houses affected American urban society could be presented from two points of view or levels of involvement. One positive and one negative. In the first aspect, it is appreciated that the installation of these homes provided citizens in poverty, the opportunity to have protection and shelter, as well as schools and nurseries for the care of children of those women who had been victims of the war and violence experienced in their countries, from which they had to emigrate and settle in the United States.

From a negative approach, it could be elucidated that the development of these settlement houses increased the immigration of people from war countries such as Russia and Ireland as a result of the war, and that in order to survive, they worked long hours and lived crowded and in subhuman conditions in this type of housing. This resulted in numerous diseases caused by the overcrowding to which these immigrants were exposed.
