The Prohibition Party is known for its disagreement on the consumption, sale, and manufacturing of alcoholic beverages. It was founded in 1869 by John Russell. They were part of the temperance movement which became an important influence on the third party system during the early 20th centuries.

It was the first party at that time to allow women in. Women's suffrage appeared on their platform in 1872. Ten years later it appeared the idea of equal pay for equal work. The Woman's Christian Temperance Union started as the first branch of the feminine Prohibition Party but later on, they transformed in a social justice dedicated movement.

During the World War II, they changed their name to "National Statesman Party" which was pretty doubtful and less political than it used to be.
