= x² + 5x + 4 ×
(1)/(x+4)

=
(x^2+5x+4)/(x+4)

factorise the numerator

x² + 5x + 4 = (x + 4)(x + 1) ← in factored form

=
((x+4)(x+1))/(x+4)

cancel the factor (x + 4) on the numerator/denominator, leaving

(f · g)(x) = x + 1 ← in simplest form
