Volume is the measure of the 3-dimensional space occupied by matter, or enclosed by a surface, measured in cubic units. Balances are instruments that measure mass (basically the amount of matter in something). A true balance measures mass directly by comparing the unknown mass to a known mass, a process that is not affected by changes in gravity.
