The Jackson family went out to dinner.

The price of the meal was $43.45.
The sales tax was 7% of the price of the meal.
The tip was 15% of the meal and the sales tax.
How much money did the Smith family pay for the meal, including tax and tip?

Answer:

$53.46

Explanation:

If the meal was $43.45 and there is a sales tax of 7% then we can think of it as 100% of the meal plus 7% therefore 100%+7%=107%. Since 107% is equal to 1.07 in decimals the meal plus the sales tax is:

43.45 * 1.07 = 46.49

Now the Jackson family is going to tip 15% on the meal and sales tax, meaning $46.49 + 15%. Similar to above 100% + 15% = 115% = 1.15. And so:

46.49 * 1.15 = 53.46
