Posterior pituitary or posterior lobe of pituitary gland is a part of endocrine system. It consists of axons of magnocellular neurosecretory cells which extend from the paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei of the hypothalamus.

These axons store and release oxytocin and vasopressin hormones. The hormones are synthesised in the hypothalamus and stored in the posterior pituitary. They are stored in neurosecretory vesicles called as Herring bodies and secreted into the bloodstream from the posterior pituitary.
