The social class structure in Latin America was strongly affected by cultural influences of the Spanish and Portuguese. For instance, Spaniards introduced to the Americas the use of horses as symbols of European superirioty, as they represented wealth, a higher physical vantage point, speed and greater mobility. They represented the superiority of European society. They also represented the superior social status shared by Spaniards, from which slaves and all conquered native peoples were excluded.
