Bartolomeu Dias, a Portuguese explorer, was the first (well, the first European) to get around the Cape. Originally, he had named it the "Cabo das Tormentas" or "Cape of Storms", because of how rough the water was.
It was later rechristened the "Cabo da Boa Esperanca" or "Cape of Good Hope" by the Portuguese king, John II, because he believed that they had found a possible passage to the East.
