x=3 y=5/2

Explanation:

1. 0.5x + y =4

2. 0.5x-y=-1

subtract the 2nd equation from the 1st

0.5x cancels out

2y = 5

y = 5/2


subs y = 5/2 into any one of the equations to find x

0.5x + 5/2 = 4

x = 3


subs to see if right:

(0.5 x 3) +5/2 = 4

(0.5 x 3) -5/2 = -1
