A 4.0 kg mass is moving to the right at 3.0 m/s an 8.0 kg mass is moving to the left at 2.0 m/s.If after the collision the two masses join together what is their velocity after collision

Here we can use momentum conservation for this type of collision problem

we can say


m_1v_(1i) + m_2v_(2i) = (m_1 + m_2)v


4(3) + 8(-2) = (4 + 8)v


12 - 16 = 12v


-4 = 12v


v = -(1)/(3) m/s

So both of the balls will move to left with speed 0.33 m/s
