Answer:

12 cm = 21.62 miles

6 cm = 11.04 miles

Explanation:

To find the distance, set up a proportion. A proportion is two equal ratios set equal to each other. We form the ratios by using corresponding values. We write a ratio of
(map)/(real world) and simplify.

We know
(map)/(real world)=(0.5in)/(2.3 miles). We know the distance on the map is 12 cm and 6 cm whish converts to 4.7 inches and 2.4 inches. We can write
(4.7in)/(xmiles) and
(2.4in)/(xmiles)

We set them equal.

(0.5)/(2.3)=(4.7)/(x)

and

(0.5)/(2.3)=(2.4)/(x)

To solve each proportion, we'll cross multiply by multiplying numerator with denominator across the equal sign.

2.3(4.7)=0.5(x)\\10.81=0.5x\\(10.81)/(0.5)=(0.5x)/(0.5) \\21.62 miles=x

and

2.3(2.4)=0.5(x)\\5.52=0.5x\\(5.52)/(0.5)=(0.5x)/(0.5) \\11.04 miles=x
