Generally, organic compounds are defined as chemical compounds, having carbon atoms covalently attached with other molecules or atoms. Organic compounds are made up of mainly carbon atoms, along with other molecules, such as nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, hydrogen.

The carbon atom makes four covalent bonds with atoms of other elements. Examples of organic compounds include proteins, carbohydrates, lactic acid, and fats.
