i) multiply both sides of equation with 4

(4 * (3)/(4) x) + (4 * ( - 12)) = - 72


3x - 48 = - 72

ii) move -48 to the right-hand side and change its sign


3x = - 72 + 48

iii) calculate the sum


3x = - 24

iv) divide both sides of equation with 3


(3x)/(3) = ( - 24)/(3)


x = - 8
