Alice needs to rent a car while on vacation. The rental company charges $17.95, plus 18 cents for each mile driven. If Alice only has $40 to spend on the car rental, what is the maximum number of miles she can drive?

im supposed to write an equation to represent the situation and show work in solving for X (maximun number of miles she can drive) if you can do this i'd appreciate and maybe then i could probably get the equation much better.

Answer: Equation: 17.95 + 0.18x = 40

122.5 miles

Explanation:

Since the rental fee is $17.95 then it will not change in any situation plus 18 cents per mile driven, then we can represent that by the expression ,

17.95 + 0.18x where x is the number of miles driven.

She has $40 so we will set the expression to equal $40.

17.95 + 0.18x = 40 Now to solve for x subtract 17.95 from both sides

-17.95 -17.95

0.18x = 22.05 Divide both sides by 0.18

x = 122.5
