Sodium chloride is an electrovalent compound , which is formed only when sodium reacts with chlorine. The electronic configuration of sodium is 2 , 8 , 1 whereas that of chlorine is 2 , 8 , 7 . The electronic configurations in sodium and chlorine show that sodium atom has only one electron more than the nearest inert gas argon in their valence shell. Thus , the sodium atom has tendency to lose one electron from its valence shell to fork Na⁺( cation ) having stable electronic configuration 2 , 8 . The chlorine atom has a tendency to gain one electron in its valence shell to form Cl⁻ ( anion ) having the stable electronic configuration 2 , 8 , 8. These two opposite charges ( cation and anion ) attract together and are held with each other by the force of attraction between Na⁺ and Cl⁻ ions , called electrovalent bond.
