When we look closely at the text, we notice the central theme or idea that the writer is trying to convey in the story revolves around stressing the importance of not forgetting our value or that of someone in an uncertain situation, even when we are uncertain about how things will unfold.

For example, recall this was evident when we observed the narrator; "a Negro and a Puerto Rican" after failing to offer assistance because of his fears of racism, said within himself,

"if I am ever faced with an occasion like that again, I am going to offer my help regardless of how the offer is going to be received."

This clearly depicts the overall message of the text that we should always offer hep "regardless of how the offer is going to be received."
