The answer is D but I don’t understand why it isn’t B. What should I be looking at in the question that’ll lead me to choose D? I thought it would be B and if it wasn’t that it would be A. Any help is appreciated! ^ - ^

Your answer may make sense but it is not the BEST answer choice. If you look at the words around the missing word, we have "future effects of foreign competition", this should be a hint that we need the word forecast. Intensify is not the best word, we are not given any clues to suggest that word.
