I'm not 100% sure that this is correct but it's the only one that makes sense in my brain. But I'm going to explain anyways.

2x + 6 = 3x - 8 (initial equation)

  1. subtract 3x from 2x and it leaves you with -x
  2. subtract 3x from 3x and it leaves you with 0 which is why there is no number there anymore.
