restaurant which charges them a service fee of 12
percent of the original price of their meal. After
this fee is factored in, the group uses a coupon to
get 25 percent off the total. In the end, what
percent discount did the group receive off the
original price?

Explanation:

Let x = the original price

After the service fee is added thus 12%(0.12x),

total(A) = x+0.12x

= 1.12x

they had a coupon and so had a 25%(0.25) discount on A.

Since we want to find out how much is left to pay, we subtract 25% from 100% and hence, we pay 75%(0.75) of A

= 0.75(1.12x)

= 0.84x

% discount = (x-0.84x/x) × 100%

= 16%
