An industrial society features a labor theory based on value, and industry develops proceeds with the creation of labor-saving devices which substitute capital for labor. Industrial societies are societies driven by the use of technology to enable mass production, supporting a large population with a high capacity for division of labor.

In a post-industrial society, knowledge is the basis for invention and innovation. It creates added value, increases returns and saves capital. The emerging of post-industrial societies are largely due to the shift in the kinds of work and the processing of information technology.
