The top of a ladder slides down a vertical wall at a rate of 0.32 m/s. At the moment when the bottom of the ladder is 8 m from the wall, it slides away from the wall at a rate of 0.6 m/s. How long is the ladder?

The formula to find the Length of the ladder is given as:

L² = x² + y²

Where L = Length of the Ladder

Let x = 8m

We solve for y

From the above question, we are told that:

The top of a ladder slides down a vertical wall at a rate of 0.32 m/s.

Hence: (-0.32)y = -0.32y

At the moment when the bottom of the ladder is 8 m from the wall, it slides away from the wall at a rate of 0.6 m/s. Hence:

8(0.6) - 0.32y = 0

4.8 = 0.32y

y = 4.8/0.32

y = 15m

Hence:

L² = x² + y²

L² = 8² + 15²

L² = 64 + 225

L² = 289

Square root both sides

L = √289

L = 17m

The length of the ladder = 17 meters(17m)
