Answer: Scout defends Walter because she understands that he is too embarrassed to tell Miss Caroline he cannot pay her back. Scout is familiar with his family and is by far the brightest student in her class, which explains why all her pupils looked towards her to defend Walter.

Hope this helps.... Stay safe and have a Merry Christmas!!!!!! :D

Answer:

Miss Caroline offered money to Walter and he couldn't accept it or explain his financial and social situation.

Step-by-step explanation:

When Scout began school, she had a new teacher named Miss Caroline. She was from a different part of Maycomb and didn't grasp all the social nuances found in Maycomb.

The Cunninghams often paid people back with products or goods, like wood or hickory nuts. When Miss Caroline, oblivious to this social structure and system, offered Walter Cunningham money for lunch, he was embarrassed to decline and explain his situation. Scout stood up for him and explained the Cunningham family.
