-3 (4 - 3x) = 5x + 16

* multiple -3 to each number in the parenthesis

-12 + 9x = 5x + 16

* add 12 to both sides to cancel it and combine like terms on the other side

9x = 5x + 28

* subtract 5x from both sides to cancel it out and combine like terms

4x = 28

* divide 4 from both sides to get x alone

x = 7
