The PTA Created a cross-country trail for the meet. The PTA placed a trail marker in the ground every four hundred yards the PTA set up a water station . The PTA wants to cover the wet areas of the trail with wood chips. They find that one bag cover a 3 1/2 yard section of the trail . If there is a wet section of the trail that is approximately 50 1/4 yards long, how many bags of wood chips are needed to cover the wet section of the trail?

Answer:

14.4 or 15 bags

Explanation:

The number of yards covered by x bags is ...

(3 1/2)x = 50 1/4

x = (50 1/4)/(3 1/2) = 50.25/3.5 ≈ 14.4*

We assume that bags of chips are available only in integer quantities.

The PTA will need 15 bags of wood chips to cover the wet section.

_____

* The exact answer is 14 5/14. We hope that an integer number is the desired solution, as anything more precise than that seems inappropriate in this context.
