Figurative language aids in establishing the poem's tone. If I state, "The linens were red," it informs you but doesn't help you understand what shade of red they were, and it doesn't enhance the poem's atmosphere. It sounds like a lot more words if I add, "The sheets were the hue of a rose petal prematurely ripped from its stem," but it provides you more imagery and explains the poem's setting better.
