Anne is referring to her ability to pretend or make non-commital remarks. Through most of the text she is completely blunt with her opinions and says exactly shat she means. In context, she says that "shamming" a bit enables her to get along better with the people around her.

Answer:

She basically means she does better when she lies.

Shamming: falsely present something as the truth.
