By 1910, Scandinavians were the largest ethnic group in Washington, making up more than 20% of the foreign-born population. In some cities, such as Seattle, they made up an even bigger percentage of the population. As the city grew, Scandinavian immigrants found new opportunities as entrepreneurs, professionals, contractors, engineers, and artisans. John Nordstrom, who founded the famous Seattle-based department store chain named after him, emigrated from Sweden in the 1880s.

Norwegian immigrants dominated the fishing industry. They owned and managed the canning and packing companies and large fishing vessels, and they held leadership positions in the fishermen’s union. Scandinavian immigrants also played an important role in the shipbuilding industry.
After the turn of the century, Scandinavians became more involved in politics as well. For example, Ole Hanson became Seattle’s mayor in 1918, and Arthur Langlie became Washington’s governor in 1941.
