Wind Mountain is an archaeological study area located in southwestern New Mexico. Potsherds are broken pieces of prehistoric Native American clay vessels. One type of painted ceramic vessel is called Mimbres classic black-on-white. At three different sites the number of such sherds was counted in local dwelling excavations. Answer:

The null hypothesis would be

H0: μ1=μ2=μ3 (all the means of the three sites are equal)

Explanation:

Site I Site II Site III

28 47 46

54 22 27

44 65 40

16 56 22

21 17 58

36

The null hypothesis would be

H0: μ1=μ2=μ3 (all the means of the three sites are equal) against the claim

Ha: μ1≠μ2≠μ3 (all the means of the three sites are not equal)

Which if H0 is true, has an F -distribution with v1=k-1 and v2= n-k degrees of freedom.

ANOVA (one way of analysis of variance ) can be applied to test this hypothesis.
