Answer:

y = -5/2

x = 9/2

Explanation:

2x – 4y = 19

3x + 5y = 1

Make the x coefficients the same

6x – 12y = 57

6x + 10y = 2

Subtract the equations

(6x - 6x) + (-12y - 10y) = 57 - 2

-22y = 55

-2y = 5

y = -5/2

Substitute y into either equation to find x

2x – 4y = 19

2x – 4(-5/2) = 19

2x + 10 = 19

2x = 19 - 10

2x = 9

x = 9/2

3x + 5y = 1

3x + 5(-5/2) = 1

3x - 25/2 = 1

6x/2 - 25/2 = 2/2

6x/2 = 2/2 + 25/2

6x/2 = 27/2

2x/2 = 9/2

x = 9/2
