When graphing out equations, the two equations have to intersect at one point to have a solution. If they are parallel, it means that they will never intersect at one point and thus there is no solution for the system. A pair of lines would only have infinitely many solutions when both lines are at the same position travelling in the same direction, overlapping each other.
